What is a hydraulic press?

A hydraulic press is a machine that shapes, compresses or joins material using the force produced by pressurised hydraulic fluid in a cylinder. It is used for operations such as sheet metal drawing, forming and moulding. Choosing a hydraulic press is not a matter of tonnage alone: the right press is selected according to the material, tooling and production cycle.

How does a hydraulic press work?

The system is based on Pascal's principle: pressure applied to a confined fluid is transmitted through it. The pump supplies oil flow; pressure acting on the effective cylinder area produces linear force. Depending on the design, valves and controls regulate direction, speed and pressure.

  1. Approach: The moving platen or ram approaches the part and die.
  2. Pressing: The force and motion profile defined for the operation is applied.
  3. Dwell: Pressure is maintained for a dwell period if required by the process.
  4. Return: The moving section returns to its starting position; the part is removed or transferred by automation.

This sequence is an example cycle. Options such as heating, multiple cylinders, ejectors and feeding systems change the cycle according to the application.

Where are hydraulic presses used?

The press family is assessed together with the part material and intended operation. You can start exploring Hidrosay products through these applications:

Not every press can perform all these operations. In sheet drawing, for example, tooling arrangement and material flow are key; in hot moulding, temperature distribution and dwell time are important.

What is the difference between hydraulic, mechanical and servo presses?

Selection requires assessing control needs alongside production speed. “Servo press” does not describe a single mechanical structure: a servo motor can be used in a mechanical drive or a hydraulic pump system.

Key differences affecting press selection
CriterionHydraulic pressMechanical press
Force generationThrough fluid pressure and cylinder areaThrough a motor and mechanical transmission

No technology can be said to be faster or use less energy in every application. Comparisons must use the same part and cycle conditions.

How do you choose the right hydraulic press?

Preparing the following six items before requesting a quote makes the technical assessment more concrete.

  1. Part and material

Drawing, dimensions, material type and thickness; description of the operation.

  2. Force and process

Required pressing force, pressure dwell and any heating requirements.

  3. Tooling and working area

Die width, length, height and weight; loading method and access needs.

  4. Stroke and daylight

Travel distance, working clearance when open and space for part removal.

  5. Cycle and production quantity

Target parts/hour, shift pattern, loading and unloading times.

  6. Control and integration

Process values to monitor, automation, factory layout and service expectations.

If not all values are known, start with the part drawing and production target. Share the available information in Build your press. This list is for preliminary assessment; the final design of the machine and its safeguarding requires application-specific engineering.

When should a custom hydraulic press be chosen?

A custom design is considered when a standard press’s working area, die layout or loading method does not meet production needs. Part dimensions, the required process and connections to the existing production line are assessed together.

You do not need to know every technical value to begin. Share your part, any tooling information and your production target in the Build your press section. We can clarify the project requirements together.

Hydraulic press FAQs

Can a 100-tonne press produce every part?

No. Force capacity alone is insufficient. Part shape, material properties, tooling, platen dimensions and stroke must also be suitable.

Are deep drawing and forming presses the same?

Both can be used for shaping, but sheet flow and pressing arrangements in deep drawing may create different requirements. The suitable system is determined alongside the part geometry.

What is a servo-hydraulic press?

It generally means a system whose hydraulic pump is driven by a servo motor. Energy consumption and control performance depend on the selected system and actual production cycle; the same savings cannot be expected for every job.

What documents should you share when buying a press?

A part drawing, material information, die dimensions and target output are a good start. A video of the existing process and the factory layout can also help the assessment.

What does hydraulic press maintenance include?

It includes assessing oil, filters, connections, seals and controls according to the manufacturer's maintenance plan. Intervals depend on the machine and operating conditions. Explore Hidrosay service and maintenance.
